The University of Glamorgan has been awarded a first for its environmental policies in the ‘Green League’ of universities. It is the first UK University to be awarded the ISO 14001 accreditation

Evaporative cooling from ecocooling at Ipswich Sixth Form College

Reflecting their strong environmental policy the University sought the lowest carbon and environmental impact cooling solution for their new 30kW data centre. They also required the security of N+1 redundancy.

Two EcoCooling CREC units with associated flow and exhaust ductwork were installed. Evaporative cooling provides compliant temperature air avoiding the use of refrigeration completely. The low energy air distribution system utilises efficient, variable speed extract fans. This system uses less than 10% of the energy of a comparable refrigeration based Computer Room Air Conditioner (CRAC).

EcoCooling evaporative coolers were chosen because of their low energy usage and associated low carbon footprint and also their ability to be able to automatically control the air flow and hence temperature within the building. Noise is controlled via the use of roof mounted attenuation which allows the stringent N35 criteria to be met.

The design commissioned provides three EcoCooling evaporative coolers and three large Natural louvred vents with polycarbonate louvres. The coolers have sound attenuation both before and after the fan system to ensure noise compliance is met. The system uses 90% less power than a conventional system and will save the University several thousand tonnes of carbon emissions per annum.
